Most travelers arrive at Victoria Falls the same way: a short flight, a transfer van, a hotel check-in. The falls are impressive. The logistics are forgettable. The Rovos Rail route between Pretoria and Victoria Falls covers 1,400 kilometers of southern Africa over three or four nights, including a game drive in Hwange National Park, a formal dining car, and terrain most itineraries skip entirely.
If you have already read about Rovos Rail and its full route network, this post goes deeper on the Victoria Falls itinerary: what the journey covers day by day, what is included, and how to build a larger Africa trip around it.
The Route
The train runs between Rovos Rail Station in Pretoria and Victoria Falls Station in Zimbabwe. Below, the itinerary follows the Pretoria-to-Victoria Falls direction. The Victoria Falls-to-Pretoria journey covers the same route and stops in reverse order, with departure from the Victoria Falls Hotel at 17:00 and arrival in Pretoria on the final morning.
The three-night journey covers the core route. The four-night version adds a stop at Matobo National Park outside Bulawayo, where guests transfer by vehicle to see San cave paintings, rock art, and the grave of Cecil John Rhodes atop Malindidzimu Hill. If your schedule allows it, the four-night departure gives the journey more room.
Day by Day: Pretoria to Victoria Falls
Day 1: Pretoria
The three-night journey departs Rovos Rail Station at 10:00. The four-night departs at 18:00. Guests settle into their suites, explore the lounge and observation cars, and dinner is served formally in the dining car that evening. The dress code for evening meals is jacket and tie for men, cocktail attire for women. This formality is not incidental. It is part of what the train is.
Day 2: Hwange National Park
An early morning game drive begins at 06:00 at The Hide in Hwange National Park, one of Zimbabwe’s largest wildlife areas at 1,462,000 hectares. Guests return to the train before lunch. The afternoon runs through baobab country, and the train travels one of the world’s longest stretches of straight railway line: 114 kilometers between Dete and Gwaai. Wildlife sightings from the open-air observation car during this stretch are common.
Day 3 (three-night): Limpopo and the Highveld
This is an at-leisure day on board. The train crosses the Tropic of Capricorn, passes through Warmbaths (Bela-Bela) and Nylstroom, and traverses the edge of the escarpment where the Highveld drops sharply. The border crossing at Beitbridge between Zimbabwe and South Africa happens during this stretch.
Day 3 (four-night): Matobo National Park
Guests transfer by vehicle for approximately 45 minutes to Matobo National Park to visit bushmen caves, San rock art, and the hilltop grave of Cecil John Rhodes. The train continues through baobab country and crosses the border at Beitbridge that evening.
Day 4 (four-night): At Leisure
The train crosses the Limpopo River into South Africa, passes through the Tropic of Capricorn, and moves through Limpopo province toward Pretoria.
Final Morning: Victoria Falls
Arrival at Victoria Falls Station. Luggage should be ready for collection 15 minutes before arrival. Rovos Rail strongly advises against same-day onward flights, as train timing depends on rail infrastructure outside their direct control.
What Is Included
All meals and beverages throughout the journey are included, with the exception of international sparkling wine. South African wines are served at meals. Breakfast runs from 07:00 to 10:00, lunch is at 13:00, tea at 16:30, and formal dinner at 19:30.
Excursions with a qualified guide are included where specified in the itinerary, as are entrance fees. Gratuities, personal expenses, travel insurance, and pre- or post-tour transfers are not included. Cancellation insurance is compulsory per Rovos Rail’s terms.
Suite categories on this route are Pullman (approximately 76 square feet), Deluxe (approximately 108 square feet), and Royal (approximately 172 square feet). Royal Suites include a Victorian bathtub. All suites have en-suite bathrooms, air conditioning, writing desks, and real beds.
How to Build a Larger Itinerary Around It
The Victoria Falls route pairs well with a safari on either end. The falls sit within reach of Chobe National Park in Botswana and Hwange in Zimbabwe. Two to four nights at a lodge before or after the train creates a trip that moves between bush and rail without repeating the same experience.
For travelers already spending time in South Africa, the train replaces a domestic flight with three or four days of overland travel through geography most itineraries skip: Limpopo province, the Highveld escarpment, and the Zimbabwean interior.
Victoria Falls itself warrants at least two nights. Excursion options include helicopter flights over the gorge, white-water rafting on the Zambezi, sunset cruises, and guided walks to the falls. Water volume peaks between February and May, when spray can limit close-range visibility. July through September brings lower water and cleaner sightlines into the gorge.
A Few Practical Notes
Passports must have at least five blank visa pages and be valid for at least six months beyond your return date. Entry requirements for Zimbabwe vary by nationality, and your travel advisor can point you to current government resources before you book.
Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for Zimbabwe. Consult your physician before departure.
Availability on this route moves faster than most travelers expect. The train carries a maximum of 72 guests across 36 suites. Confirmed bookings require a 25 percent deposit, with full payment due 60 days before travel.
